Last week on my Facebook Live broadcast, I had the amazing opportunity to chat with Frances Bryant-Scott about what she’s creating, why she joined the Biz Game Development Playground, and the “Rulz” of her biz.
Franny joined the Biz Game Development Playground six months ago when she felt burned out with the kind of business practices that just didn’t fit for her. She identified that she needed support for what she does in a way that “really recognized and honored” how she is in the world. She didn’t need someone to add to the voices telling her to change who she was to fit into the business world. Franny credits working in the Game Development Playground with helping realign with her own spirit.
The artist inside Franny had always expressed desire to create something tangible as a part of her counseling and coaching business. Franny says “I decided to work with Jean because her enthusiasm for game creation combined with her gentle and sure confidence really fit for me”. Franny went on to describe her experience in the Biz Game Development Playground:
I met someone at a retreat who played Jean’s [Angels, Peacocks & Butterflies] game regularly so I tried it out. I loved the idea that something like that could play a part in my own work. The idea of a set of oracle type cards had come up for me once in a while through the years, but I haven’t ever had the confidence or the tenacity to even look into how it might be accomplished. That feels different now! Now I can see my own natural rhythms as a positive force in developing something that will be completely aligned with who I am and with the deepest values of my work. Treading slowly and steadily, doing something small daily, and paying deep attention to the spiritual guidance that’s always available through my own practice, will get me to a really joyful, aligned, and productive place so much faster and more certainly than my old habits of listening to everyone else’s advice but my own, trying to do it all FAST, and then running scared from it when I realize it doesn’t fit.”
The Most Important Rule in Franny’s Business…. Be compassionately curious!
The attitude I try to take towards my work is always one of compassionate curiosity. Bringing curiosity and wonder to everything I do can free me from self-critical thinking. We simply can’t hold onto negative judgment at the same time as we hold true curiosity.
Being curious or finding a way to be fascinated with something, helps me to be brave when I am trying something new. It’s the attitude I try to help my clients develop towards themselves and their own artwork. If we do things in the safe environment of the studio that takes a little bravery and a little curiosity, then we get better at doing and learning new things everywhere else in our lives too.
This is really important at those transitional times in our lives when we feel like we have lost our grounding or don’t even know who we are anymore. In the midst of loss and change, it’s easy to get stuck in fear. When I help people to find their sense of wonder and curiosity about what is possible, and to experience their own creativity as a place of excitement and fun rather than judgment and worry, they discover that they can bring that ability back out into their everyday world and begin to find sources of joy that surprise them.”
Franny is currently re-creating herself in relationship to her business by developing online platform for supporting people through their loss and grief using art and creative process. This includes creating a game with her own work. Through working in the Playground as part of a daily practice, she’s learned what a huge & miraculous difference that kind of intention (and attention) can make to her business. Franny has a private practice in British Columbia offering art therapy, counseling, and workshops.
